Instead of spending most of the time in a hotel, check out alternatives for 1 or 2 nights like Pousadas or living with a family or volunteering. This option involves a unique experience with the destination, locals and yourself.
A little more about Brazil:
Beyond the greatness of the country and food, the spirit of the people are very kind and friendly. There are many stray dogs that roam, if you are uncomfortable around animals, like me, hire a tour guide.
Our arrival city was Salvador in Bahia - This part of Brazil is so massive, I need about a month to explore more. We did our best and enjoyed ourselves. We stayed in the Pelourhino area and was surrounded by museums, markets, forklore shows, drummers, small restaurants and shops. The weather was and is always very warm - I LOVE IT! The best part was learning about the Afro-Brazilian history and to stuff our faces with Pao de Queijo!
The accommodations was at the beautiful Casa do Amarelindo. The owners will pick you up from the airport and bring you back to the remarkable hotel that they built. This first caipirihna was experienced here by the warm and friendly staff - I have not had any since I left that are as great.
A great surprise for the last night - a sustainable resort - The last night in Brazil we stayed in Florianopolis, a beautiful island of Santa Catarina. The pousada (smaller scale resort), Natur Campeche - this cozy, intimate and friendly pousada was sustainable and modern. All of the rooms have been decorated personally by the owner from different parts of the world, no one room is alike. Composting and energy conservation is priority however you do not feel overwhelmed with the approach to nature. The beach is a short stroll from the property and peaceful. Laziness is encouraged with the many hammocks that are placed outside of rooms and near the pool. This resort is unique and should be a definite visit when you are in Florianopolis!
